After extensive litigation and negotiation among House members, Congress has officially voted to pass the “One Big Beautiful Bill” and send it to President Trump’s desk for a July 4th signing tomorrow.
The bill passed with a 218-214 vote, with the sole Republican “nays” being Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) and Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA).
Trump’s pet bill underwent much discussion and negotiations through the last 24 hours after failing an initial vote to advance it due to bipartisan opposition. This opposition included an 8 hour, 44 minute long filibuster from House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY), breaking the record previously held by Speaker Kevin McCarthy since 2021 for longest speech given on the House floor in US history.
The latest version of the OBBB is expected to be signed by the President sometime tomorrow morning in a patriotic display for the nations 249th birthday.
Contained in this controversial piece of legislation is additional funding for ICE and border security, the removal of illegal aliens from the umbrella of any type of Medicaid assistance (as well as imposing additional requirements to qualify for it), permanence to Trump’s tax cuts, a cap on tips and overtime taxes, expanded energy resourcing, and reduced government spending. However, criticism of the bill has stemmed from its increase to the debt ceiling and deficit.
“Republicans in Congress have succeeded in our mission to enact President Trump’s America First agenda,” Speaker Mike Johnson stated after the vote was finalized. “Today, the House has passed generational legislation that permanently lowers taxes for families and job creators, secures the border, unleashes American energy dominance, restores peace through strength, reduces spending more than any other bill ever has, and makes government more efficient and effective for all Americans…all hard-working Americans should know — this bill is for you.”
